“When Jesus, therefore, saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold your son!” Then He said to the disciple, “Behold your mother!” And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home. – John 19:26-27 – compassion until the last breath.
Do you believe that when Jesus was hanging on that cross, He was thinking about you and me? Here’s proof.
The whole time that He was there, hanging on that cross, He was looking at the people – not with hatred but with compassion. Thus, saying this 3rd statement towards His mother and His disciple.
The Pain of a Childless Mother
Mary knew beforehand what was going to happen, even before Jesus Christ was born. Or she might not know everything, but she knew that Jesus Christ is here for a purpose.
This, however, did not stop her from loving Jesus Christ as her own child – He is indeed her child after all. And in this entire turmoil, Mary is there, watching helplessly, knowing that this is supposed to happen but not wanting it to happen.
You probably understand this kind of confusion, when you stand in a situation where you know something is supposed to happen because it is for the best, but you don’t want it to happen anyway, because it hurts a lot.
Now, imagine how Mary feels about all these happenings. She knew that Jesus was just given to her for a short while, she understood that there is a purpose for all of these sufferings, but she is watching her child, being flogged, tortured, mocked, and dying on the cross. What would you have felt?
And in the midst of everything that is happening, Jesus understood this. He understood what His mother is feeling and so He provided a way to comfort her.
He Provides
“Woman, behold your son!” … “Behold your mother!”
He knew His mother will be alone and lonely and He knew that John will be left without anyone else as well, for the moment, as all of the other disciples have gone. And so He provided comfort for both of them, not minding His own pain.
Compassion until the last breath
Jesus is compassionate towards you. Do you know why Jesus Christ has to be born as a man and walk on this earth despite Him being the Son of God? It is so that He will experience everything that we are experiencing.
He came here to suffer as we suffer, to live as we live, and to face pain, hurt, and death as we do.
Jesus knows your pain and He understands your sufferings. He loves you and He wants to provide for you just as He provided comfort to Mary and John – just as He provided assurance to the dying criminal who believed. He wants to provide for you.
Jesus knows your pain.
As He said, even before His death, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest… For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30)
What should I do?
Believe that He died so you will no longer suffer and feel that pain. And receive Him into your heart. That’s all you have to do.
We’d want to pray for you. If you have something you want to pray for, talk to us.
